Default GP Shift Mod 98 CBR 900RR

Thanks in advance for any help with this...

I have started attending track days and very quickly realize the importance of GP Shift capabilities.

I have head that a CBR 900 would reverse shift with a simple VFR shift lever installed. But I cannot find part numbers for this lever, and I cannot find info on which year VFR will fit a 98 CBR 900RR...or if there are more parts i would need.

New rear sets are $300+...and a VFR Shift Lever is $30.

Has anyone done this mod? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I definately want GP Shifting before Road Atlanta in June.

Simple, you can do it one of two ways. One way is without purchase of anything. Take the 10mm head bolt out of the linkage that is on the shift shaft. Take that "arm" linkage off the shift shaft. Rotate that arm 180 degrees and put back on. NOW, if your shift linkage hits the frame take and bend that linkage ever so slightly to clear the frame. You are done.

OR

You purchase a 929 shift linkage arm. The one that goes on the shift shaft. It is bent a little different than the 900's. It works!!!

Trust me I have done both ways!!! Works like a champ.

Well, I got the 98 VFR shift lever and it fits perfectly. It was a three minute mod! No bending rods, no complications at all! Highly recomend it. Lever was $30, and I can even put the old settup back on (because it isn't bent) anytime I want to. Also eliminated all the slop in the linkage. feels great!

Great idea!

I would love to see some pictures of this on some CBRs. After readint this I am considering doing this as well. 1 up and 5 down sounds like it might be worth a try for me.

dude take it off with a 10mm wrench just like they said. flip it over 180* and you have it. it takes less than 3 minutes to do.

The point of this mod is to allow upshifts while leaned over through a left hand turn. So your toes will not be squeeze between the tarmac and shifter. You should never have to down shift in a left hand turn (or right also) but you might need to upshift. Technically, you should get all your down shifting done while straight up before the turn. Plus its easier while in a speed tuck to push down to upshift.
