no you dont need to use your clutch to shift, you dont have to in a car either. that doesnt mean its good for the tranny.shorter levers is nothing like a short shifter in a car sense in a car a short shifter is a short "throw" shifter.which has nothing to do with the clutch. it makes the distance you push from 1st to 2nd gear shorter and so on through the gears. it would be like tighting or loosing (if you had a cable clutch in a car) making it easier or harder to push to the point at which it disengages.

+1 on the not needing to shift. and a +1 for the if f's up your tranny. but yeah mmg, think volkswagon bus... you only need a clutch for first and maybe second gear. after that you really dont need it.

btw, i was looking at morepowerracing.com, someone put it on a thread, and i read all about short shifters which you can get for a bike. what it does is you set it to a specific rpm, say 13k, and when it gets to that, your powercommander will cut injection momentarily so you can shift without a clutch and not hurt your tranny. its basically a computer clutch with wicked fast reaction. but you have to be good to use it.

i hear ya guys - the only problem is you're comparing a fine tuned machine - a 2007 fuel injected Honda CBR600 Race Ready ------>>>>>>>>>>> To a Volkswagon Bus - so why are we even talking about the possibility of NOT using a clutch.

The point of a shortie is that they are more resistant to breaking in a lowside. CRG makes great ones, I think you can get them for like 189 for both sides. The whole short shift thing is kinda null, you need some aftermarket rearsets to shorten the "throw" length of you shifter. You can also adjust the clutch so that it grabs at the very end of your clutch pull. For example I only pull in my clutch lever about 1/2 inch to get it to fully disengage. All the adjustable lever does is change where the lever sits, not how where it grabs, that adjustment is on the clip-on, and the important one is on the cable mount on the right side case.

two finger braking and clutching = shorty levers. But get whatever you are comfortable with ( as long as they are shorty )

For me personally...I dont like the shorty levers. Call me old school...but I've been riding with standard length for 30 years and have XXL hands. The ASV levers Ihave are shorter than OEM but longer than shorty's.......just right!
