I know this is a super old thread... but I know a thing or two about US 129 between Tabcat bridge at Chilhowee Lake and hwy 28.
I can honestly and confidently say I've ridden more miles on Deal's Gap than anyone else currently living in Texas.
My dad ran the Crossroads of Time (the store and motel at the intersection of 129 and 28) and he was the one who first started heavily marketing the area to motorcyclists.
The road's actual name, Deal's Gap, came from the days when it was just a dirt trail and there was a small store/outpost where the current store is today and it was owned and operated by the Deal family... hence the name Deal's Gap.
The Tail of the Dragon is the name of the store across the street from the Crossroads and was opened by Ron and Nancy Johnson. They originally operated out of a pop-up tent at the overlook.
Here's my dad at the overlook on his goldwing (sorta) back in the mid 2ks

It may seem kinda cheesy now... but when I was 12, I was super excited to help design this tshirt to be sold at the store. Received zero royalties from sales.
