I have a 97 with 10,800 miles and it has made a similar "clunck" sound when I shift into 1st from nuetral and when I shift from 1st to 2nd. The noise has been there since I purchased the bike last summer with 2800 miles on it.
same here, N > 1st and 1st > 2nd clunking. i've lubed the chain to get rid of the some of the chain noise when decelerating, and the chain does feel a bit snug. but i was thinking the main culprit would be the brand/type oil. i may go synthetic (dunno what's in it currently), but i'm worried to 'cause i have 33K miles on her already. i don't want an oil leak if i don't already have one....
this problem seems to be a honda thing clunky gear box, all my honda have done it (nsr 250,cbr250,cbr400,cbr600,cbr900) the worst out of the lot was the firestorm (vtr1000f) it sounded like you where useing a jack hammer to change gear, best solution i found is make shaw the chain is tensioned correctly, and try holding the clutch in a bit longer between gear changes about 1.5 secs helps with the noise especialy going between second and first.
