I just bought a 2001 CBR 600 F4i. It was a great deal and I got it for a good price, only 12,500 miles. The only problem is that the chain is loose. Since having the rear tire aligned properly is important, is it better to take the bike to a technician, or is this a common sense (with directions) type maintenance issue.

Also, are tools a big issue. Can this be hand tight or does it require a power tool?

The chain is supposed to have slack in it. about 24mm (about an inch and a quarter) from the swingarm to the top of the lower chain link when pressed upwards and taught give or take 5mm. if it is less than 24mm, adjust it so that it is 24-32mm. this is material covered in your owners manual. nothing on the bike needs power tools, ever.

loosen the axle (nut), adjust both adjusters equal amounts making sure to set the adjuster lock nut when finished, and re-torque the axle (nut) to the bike's specification (CBR600RR is 68 Ft.Lbs. F4i may be different).

Check your manual for chain slack recommendations. On my F2, they say .6 -1" Any more than that and I get a nasty jerk every time I go from 1 -2 gear. It's really simple as long as you do both sides the same.
