Gas smell - Floats?
I haven't been riding too reguarly lately due to weather and injuries. I noticed everytime I went to ride my bike after it was sitting for weeks or months it was out of gas. Well I hadn't been turning the petcock off so it was probably draining down into the carbs and out vents or into the crank case. I've started shutting the petcock off and changed the oil but it still reaks like fuel when you stand anywhere near the bike. I'm guessing I have a leaky float but I though I would check to see if anyone else has some ideas.
one of the big problems i've seen with the 600's is that
the seals on the petcock go bad fast.. the easiest way to
check is to take off the side plastic and turn it a few times,
check for leaks.
i had to completely replace it. frankly gas is getting to be
more expensive than replacing the simple parts.

I don't think it would be coming out of the floats because these bikes don't have the old school petcocks that are gravity fed. They use fuel pumps, etc, so should not let fuel through to the carbs. Of course this also shows you the trail you need to follow to determine where the leak is. As suggested above, I'd start with the petcock itself.
