Today I was coming back from class and popped a sit-down wheelie, as always, and I stood it up a little more than usual, actually riding this one at a constant speed, and the bottom end started to wobble left and right, so as soon as I felt that, I set it down easy, what causes the bike to wobble like that? Is it because the bike is standing so straight up that it just gets off balance? Thanks.

 

The biggest reason for this is to much air in rear tire. Alot of people are wheeling with 40 pounds of air,this is very dangerous because it causes the tire to pavement contact area to be very thin. It's kind of like wheeling on a tight rope. Lowering the air pressure to around say 20 to 25 will widen your tire,and there for give you more tire to pavement contact. This will help alot to eliminate tire wobble. As soon as you feel a wobble,you have to set it down right away,or it can get out of control fast,and you will be kissing the pavement.

From what I've been reading, low air preasure is good for low speed stuff but if you want to learn to steer your wheelies at higher speeds you want more than 20 25 psi. Also, the wooble could be from worn tires. Now I'm no expert, but I've gotten decent at first gear wheelies,I'm at balance point and experience no wooble on realitivily new tires at 38 psi. well i have been doing 2nd gear sit downs for a few months now and have never had this happen to me, until friday, and I keep my tire around 40 psi, and my tires arn't worn down, but im def. not expert on wheelies either, so I wouldn't really know what caused it, but good advice always helps

 

I've sence progressed to attempting second gear sit downs, of coarse I'm no where close to balance point. Maybe you should drop your tire preasure and see what happends. Let us know what happends. Myself, I want to learn the hard way (38+ psi) because sence the gas prices have climbed my bikes my primary sorce of transportation.

 

Tire wobbles happen easier the higher up you are,and you said you were higher up this time. That doesn't mean your going to feel them everytime your high up there. You may do wheelies for a long time,and not feel the wobble again.But the lower air will give you a wider tire,and there for be more stable.If your going to run high psi be careful. I've seen two videos where the back tire started wobbling. The first guy put it down right away but went into a tank slapper and wrecked. The 2nd guy kept it up,and wiped out big time.

 

thanks sixshooter989, yea after seeing those videos of the guys loosing control when it started to wobble made me instinctively immediately set the bike down, and like you said one went into a tank slapper, so i tried to set it down as straight and easy as possible, which this time worked
