The unfortunate part is that most people will never understand our side. Responsible riders never get credit, ESPECIALLY on the news.
Fun story: A redneck-ish (mostly just stupid) kid from my high school got a suzuki katana. Not sure what year, but it had carbs instead of FI. I think 600cc. Regardless, he had no prior experience riding a bike. He got this thing, and sometimes I would be at work and hear a bike hauling up the highway. I look, and its him. Shorts, tennis shoes, T-shirt, $50 helmet, going probably 100. There is a good bit of traffic on that road too.
Its clowns like that that give us the bad reputation. I tried to tell him on several occasions to slow down for his own safety, get some protective gear, master the basics, blah blah blah. Nothing changed. Its too easy for stupid people to get motorcycles.

i don't care... i think speed limits ARE the problem.
IMHO, we only need one traffic law violation - reckless driving. a guy on a sport tuned sportbike going 15-20 mph faster than what cars could do on that road is honestly no big deal. it's not reckless.
the guy goin' 153.... that's a different story.
make getting a reckless driving violation really damn serious. get rid of all the other stupid rules/laws. cops will only be looking for one thing - dangerous drivers. still give people their day in court, and the roads would eventually get safer - because people would be taking more responsibility for themselves.
look at other countries with no speed limits. better drivers, safer roads. i don't care how much the "nanny state" tries to solve road safety with laws, violations, rules, etc. -slower speeds, wider lanes, safer cars. - it doesn't make roads safer, it just dumbs down the drivers.
enforce reckless drivng and enforce vehicular man-slaughter - and i bet you'd see everyone be a little bit more safe
wow... sorry for the rant... i'm done...
