Info about roll starting a streetbike
 

I know when people have a low battery or starter trouble they have to bump start their bike. It looks like I will have to learn this technique for the next month or so if I want to be able to ride at all. I basically had starting trouble because a piece of the block broke off which holds the starter gear in place so I just removed it. I plan on replacing the engine in the mean time but for now I just wanna ride.

SO, what are your experiences with bump starting??? I know its not very convenient but I wanna ride.

i have never done it but i assume you just push fast as possible in first with clutch in and dump the clutch but i may very well be wrong.

1: Run as fast as possible with key on/kill switch off/fuel on/bike in neutral--nothing's more embarrassing than bump starting the bike and failing because there's no spark or fuel.
2: Upshift to 2nd with clutch in.
3: Standing on footpegs, stand up, push down with your legs to load up rear wheel and dump clutch.

1st gear is usually too steep to start it. It helps to find a downhill stretch to use. I did this a bunch cause my starter died a couple weeks ago, and before I replaced it with another one I had to bump start it nearly every time. It's not hard to do, just do it.

That used to be about the only way I started my dirtbikes. I had a big hill directly out the door of where I kept the bikes so it was just easier.
Except when the grass was real wet.... then sometimes it didn't work so well. Still fun, tho. :D

Better than the really old fashioned way where you ran alongside the bike to build up momentum, tried to hop on the really unstable wobbly beast and pop the clutch :p

Hell I don't think it's possible to run alongside a sport bike

Yep, you have to on my KLR650. It's so tall, you don't really have a choice. (talk about looking fockin' stupid trying to run on your tiptoes and going nowhere... LOL)
