RE: the best helmets - you might be suprised

The cheap full face DOT only helmets protect you better in 99.9999999% of accidents than the expensive lids. In fact the ZR1, a $70 helmet came out on top. The difference in protection between a SNELL rated helment and a DOT rated helmet, can be the difference between death and a good war story. The DOT only rated helmets come out on the war story side.

The flaw with the snell ratings is they require the helmet to with stand two hits in the exact same location. If you follow all the real world accidents they used in the test, that never happened once. So the SNELL rating requires the foam to be much harder, which adds tens of extra g forces on your grey matter. 30 or 40 extra G's is the difference between life and death. For everyone that thinks they need that firmer foam in a high speed crash, they looked at accidents on the autobahn also. Still the same conclusion. In fact in all their tests, the ZR1 never had less than 1 inch of foam left to compress.

Marketing hype or your head? Read the article for the details.

This is a wide open debate.....seems it really depends on the type of accident. The good thing is that this debate will shake old notions and lead to a completely new perspective on helmet design....I hope!!! It may mean we will all be safer in the long run. It is really great that this is all coming out...........thanks for the update.
