RE: yea i know this is a cbr forum but..
the way i figure it i'll need to change tires once, and i could do that myself, and probably adjust the chain. or definately. haha
i imagine it would bea bad a$$ ride. i want an enduro, and if i have the time i would like an awesome trip too. if you have the dough you could buy one anywhere, but a trip like that would be awesome.
my friend rode to wyoming from atl ga on a klr650, its definately possible.

I'm definitely not gonna tell you not to go... I'm all for roadtrips so I'll say hell yea go for it!! I don't know much about dual sports so can't really give much advice there. But good luck with whatever you decide

Aerostitch Rider's Warehouse http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/index.htmlcatalog or web site...you'll need a ton of crap from them. They specialize in super long journey type gear and must haves.
No question the bike will make it, but it'll be a costly trip. Sure you don't want to buy one local or in the lower 48 somewhere?
PS Your *** will hate you afterwards.

I bought a new 96 DR 650. Then I boiught a new 2000 KTM 640 E with plans to convert the DR into a supermotard. A friend bought the DR and I wound up converting the KTM instead. Then a freinds son bought the KTM from me. I miss the DR.
Possibly the very best $300.00 I ever spent on a motorcycle was having Sargents build a new seat on the stock pan. I could not ride that thing a half an hour without an aching ***. After they finished the seat, it was all day comfortable. This is something you may want to consider taking with you on the flight to pick up the bike. Or maybe send it UPS to the pick up point.
Another thing is the fuel range. You can address that with one of the large after market tanks. The stocker is only good for about 140ish miles. I lived in Alaska. I wouild want at least a couple of hundredto the tank.
I like the DR 650 a lot. I would rather have it than a KLR or an XLR. The engine is the smoothest single cyclinder out there and it is dead reliable. It should make a great mount for this particular trip...with the mods I mentioned.
I still think it would make a nice Supermotard with some suspension work too.
