Default Women let's her 9 yr old travel the NY subway....alone

Guess this goes in hand with the wussification of our children. Although I see merits on this...

[ul][*]It builds the child self-confidence[*]It proves that if your child does get seperated it, there's a higher percentage chance that they will find their way home.[/ul]
I just don't know if I would be up to the nail biting event of them doing it. I probably would tag along and not give any advice, but just follow and make sure there is some safety. Though I have to say, I can't remember when my parents started letting me walk home from school by myself.

My 10-year-old son takes the subway to school by himself every day. He did that route with me for years before he started going on his own, so he has it totally memorized and knows all about express and local stops, etc. And he knows my cell number and my wife's and our home number. He takes his basketball with him, and I'm worried some high school kids might decide to mess with him and take his ball. So far no problems, though.

Crime is the lowest it's been since they began keeping records 45 years ago, and is much lower than when I was his age in the mid-70s and was taking the train by myself.

I send my kids to the grocery store a couple blocks away, and they walk over to their friends' house or go to the movies without having an adultescort them.

NYC (5 bouroughs) is not like its made out to be in the movies (gun shots, people screaming, Chaulk outlines)

Its actually quite nice, though there are some "rougher" neighborhoods but there still not bad.

When i was around 12-13 we used to take the train/subway to "the city" (nyc) all the time to get some chicken & rice / souvlaki / and the infamous dirty water dogs..

Yeah...but one requires the use of 2 numbers....and the other one only one... you really should have waited until 11.
