One Columbus defense attorney said he thinks the case will be scrutinized heavily.
“I think it’s going to have a big ripple effect for criminal defense attorneys,” Michael Probst said.
Probst said his clients have been charged with reckless driving for going 20 miles over the speed limit.
He said he’s never had a client drive 147 miles per hour, and he said he thinks fellow lawyers will cite the officers’ case in contesting reckless driving charges against their clients.
“I absolutely think that local criminal defense attorneys will point to this case, especially considering that they’re police officers,” Probst.
Thomas was expected in court next week.

pretty goddamn ridiculous. love that, within 2 minutes of getting caught, they are laughing it up with the crew.

I hate the double standard that is givin to "officers or the law"

CrashTECH 07-31-2009 06:28 AM

Yeah... this made me mad. The law is the law, but I think that SHP etc should be held to a higher standard even. Especially if they are going to give me a ticket.

No where to run on a freeway like that anyways ..

and with badges in there pockets ... I spose they could afford to pull over perhaps ?

In IL they made speeding 30+ MPH above the limit a Class A Misdemeanor. This means the officer is allowed to arrest you on the spot, and imprison you unless you can post bail. It also means a judge can issue up to a $5000 fine, and 364 days in jail.

I was arrested for going 41 over, but the judge let me off with traffic school.

The arresting officer can, if he deems fit, ALSO ticket you for Misdemeanor Wreckless Endangerment, and Driving too fast for Conditions. If you're witihin a school zone, get ready for a seriously heavy book to be thrown at you. There are areas in Chicagoland where a highway passes through (over) a school zone, and the troopers LOVE to use that to their advantage.
