Sell your old tank to JD for a hundo and you only paid $250 + shipping
That thing you guys are talking about is called a Heli-arc. I have heard it called a slang name of a spitzenagle gun. It spot welds rivets onto the surface, then you use a slide hammer to yank the dent out. If done right, you place the rivets about a 1/4 - 1/2 inch apart in the deepest part of the dent and a couple around the crease. Start at the outer edges of the dent and pull outpast the normal curve. While counter pressure is being held, use a flat body hammer to tap the resistence of the metal back down so it will reform. Repeat this process until as close to flat as possible. Use a set of dykes or side cutters to snip the heads of the rivets and then grind until smooth. This causes no burn holes through the metal and if ground correctly Using a small air grinder, you won't have to worry about grinding any excess material/metal off. (reducing the amount of a fiberglass fill, or even jb weld).
So, it is possible to pull that dent out and repair to a point where will minimal fill, and a re-paint done professionally, it wouldn't be noticeable. Something like that would take about 1/2 hour to prep for paint.

If your buddy owns a shop he should have known how to keep the inside of the tank from being flamable with another gas or liquid while welding it...

Congrats! If I were you, I would just save that money. The dent's not too bad. I have one just like that in the exact same spot on my F4i and I don't care. Your bike's still pretty regardless of a dent repair. It's up to you though. Just my 2 cents.
