What everyone else said... keep your head up and let this guy screw himself. I've got one of those fellas right next to me at work right now... friggin meatheads. Never you worry, these kinds of people tend to create their own bad luck and karma is certain to catch up with him. Keep on truckin dude, we all have those coworkers!!

Make something up about yourself and tell only him and see how quick it gets around, I do it all the time; quickest time till it got back to me: 76 minutes. Leave work at the door and leave your personal life at the door easiest way to "enjoy" your job with out getting caught up in the bull.

Also take into account the fact that as long as someone is technically doing their job, they can't really get fired for just being unlikeable/gossipy. Sad but true.
People can absolutely be fired for no reason in the private sector. Employment at will. My boss can walk in tomorrow tell me that I am out, and that is it. No questions asked, and he owes me no explanation.....

And if you hadn't had warnings or something documented, you could then come back and sue. You'd also be eligible for unemployment, which costs the company money. Even in an at-will state I have had to work for several months to build enough of a case to get even a ****ty worker fired.

This should be a given, or they wouldn't be here and able to type anything. It falls under the same category as removing warning labels from everything and letting the problem solve itself.

as for the co-worker, do what you're paid to do. Avoid drama you're not paid for. and if its directed at you, confront it if necessary.

Its the responsibility of your management to provide workplace behaviour training to the employees to ensure a safe working environment.
