Over here if you want to ride a bike you need to get your motorcycle license ($$$) but if the ride has more than two wheels, you can use your car license to ride it. (That's the only reason why this contraption exists. Same rules apply for the Can Am Spyder.) The stupid thing is that if you only have your bike license (like me) you aren't allowed to ride anything with more than two wheels unless you get your car license.

In short, it was invented so people who don't have their bike license can experience what it is to ride a bike.

Where's "over here". I see the OP is in Hawaii.

This is exactly what the Stossel book in my signature is about. Gov't makes a new rule, just because they and probably because they can't spend ALL day sleeping or at lunch or on break, and what happens? Unintended wasteful/adverse/inefficient/expensive/ugly/painful/destructive...... consequences. They have to understand that no one can ever see what's coming, so the central planning has to stop. Just stop screwing with us. The fewer bureaucrats the better, because they just can't help it. (rant)

From experience, the things are actually a blast to ride. We rented 2 of the 400cc versions when we were in southern Italy and had a blast with them. They're not sportbikes by any means, but I'd say that they were close to as quick as a ninja 250. My girlfriend has ZERO experience on motorcycles and she was fine after a 15 min intro in the parking lot.

It was a great novelty, but I think they said they cost about 6,000 euro, or about 8,500USD if my math is ok. For that price I'd just get a motorcycle.

It does look a little "Starship Trooper-ish" doesn't it.

And I can see how the training wheels thing would be great for a gal pal on vacation. But, why wouldn't you want her holding on tight to you instead?
