These are decent deals, right?

So I'm looking at a 2003 CBR600RR w/ 8k miles (seems pretty low for an '03). It was down once, just lowsided and minor fairing rash was all that ensued. No mechanical problems, clean title, etc, and I can pick it up for $3000. Does this sound pretty fair to you guys? My plans are to get a bike, ride it as is until spring, and then make it a track bike, so I don't want to spend a fortune on the initial outlay.

Also, I'm looking at a never-dropped, never downed 2001 GSX-R 750 for the same price (but with 21k miles). Not as interested in this, though, as I would rather learn to race on a 600. (For that matter, I'm not entirely against racing 250's). But it is in excellent condition, and I'm not totally discounting the possibility of getting it.

Thoughts?

Id go with the 8000 miles and the RR personally. Plus, Honda's just have a higher quality stardard than most other Asian bike makers. Thats why they are known for being reliable(if its been maintained regularly, of course).

Well if you wanna make it a track bike I wouldn't worry about the fairings then. 8K miles is low which is nice. 21K miles isn't exactly breaking records either.

See if either of them have maintenance records, possibly get them both checked out by someone if you don't know what you're looking at etc.

GOODLUCK! and let us know what you do.

Well, I just rode the RR. The engine/transmission/brakes perfomed flawlessly; and as I haven't ridden a sport bike in a long time, I can't really comment on the handling (well, unless it is to say that my motocross bike feels more flickable :)). But I imagine it handles pretty well.

I told the guy that if the wife doesn't object, I'll take it off his hands. But the wife is out of cell phone reach until saturday, so now the three of us (me, the owner, and "Natsuko," as I am tentatively calling her) wait in limbo for a while.
