Rusty Downpipes?

They are the only things that let my lovely old F3 down...a couple of years ago I rubbed them down to shiny metal (in situ, would have been easier off) and painted a heat proof black exhaust paint on to them. It all fell off after only six months and I'm back to square one...

Any ideas, is there a good paint out there that doesn't fall off the headers?

Also what about stainless replacements, they need to be a good copy because the F3 has little interconnecting pipes between the headers which do make a difference in power curves.

Thanks

Heat wrap em :) Heat wrap doesn't look bad, and has a few good outcomes.

No clue on refinishing them. my 929 came with titanium i think, looks brand new still.

Heat wrap just hides the rust, its still there and will continue to get worse if it gets wet.

I'm guessing you used the paint from a local auto store. That **** sucks. You're gonna have to order "good" exhuast paint. Or get them chromed jet hot (what ever its called)

Theres a spray to put on heat wrap to make it water proof.

There are a few good companies that do stainless pipes (headers & pipe) that are the same as the original, as an example, this is the type I'm talking about. www.staintune.com.au/
If you can get them over there I can highly recommend them.
I had a similiar thing happening with the headers on my trusty GS500, & I used the paint that you refurb Pot-belly stoves with, it can take the heat & will not flake. But you have to treat the rust 1st before you apply it.

Thanks for the help...I don't mind taking them back to shiny metal again, it's just getting the right paint...the stove paint sounds promising...the stuff I tried was exhaust manifold paint but it was like water and I had to put on about 3 coats to cover them, only to have it all fall off after a few months lol...

I have some of this stuff calledCalyx exhaust header dressing. I haven't put it on my headers on my vette, they have a jet-hot coating and never needed it, but i originally bought it for the stock headers and never used it.

It is made for cast iron, not steel, but the rust from either I believe is chemically similar.

or

Maybe that will do the trick, it is cheap enough to try it out.

Get em ceramic coated...that would involve some work pulling the whole exhaust though

Thanks Tommy...that stuff looks good...just might do the trick and help me keep the bike standard too...

I'll search for it over here first I'm sure there was a UK outlet for Eastwood....
