Actually, I've never seen Lost.
Ironic, or not, but "Other" is a philosophical concept also importantly related to gender studies:
Warner argues that: the modern system of sex and gender would not be possible without a disposition to interpret the difference between genders as the difference between self and Other ... havin.g a sexual object of the opposite gender is taken to be the normal and paradigmatic form of an interest in the Other.
So, just being a woman, it is absolutely appropriate for Juliet to say, its very stressful.. being an OTHER. In fact, British and female, she is two Others at one time. Accurate with no reference to Lost at all.
Or, it could have been an apropos reference to the film The Others, set entirely on the British Crown dependency of the Bailiwick of Jersey, wherein the lead character is, in fact, herself the projection she fears most. A paradox in that the Other is actually the Self. And that is very stressful...enough to keep anyone from smiling.
