I think you did the right thing in that situation, you can always pick your brain after about what you could have done differently but it's a fairly quick decision you had to make.
You could have also looked over the bike agreed to purchase it but tell him you need to go to the bank to get the money because you don't carry that much cash. Your friends stay with him and the bike while you pretend to get cash. It might have given police enough time to respond.

I can't even begin to describe my contempt for thieves. I used to steal nickel and dime **** when I was a kid, but that all stopped when I was 13 and got busted pocketting a Playboy VHS from the mall. I developed a phobia of tag sensors that are installed in the exits of stores for awhile and learned my lesson. Later, I finally developed some morals.
