my brother had an old volvo that needed a timing belt so he took it to pep boys because the volvo dealer wants your first born child to do anything, they didnt have the propper tool to tighten it correctly but they put it on anyway, my brother picks it up and it slips and destroys the motor on the way home... they wouldnt replace it, and the car wasnt worth the time or trouble of suing.....

anyyyway, to me it seems like you could drop a new motor in it for alot less than 6k, granted it was an older car but i think they put a NEW motor in that volvo for around 1500 (was put in fora friend cheap)

2003 had 80XXX miles on it when it went.

Only problem with a new motor is that VW has 4 different engine codes of the same car, so you have to match the code with the ecu etc for it to run. The closest one is in VA in a junkyard and they want $3200. I just dont like the fact that its been sitting or knowing if that has damage too. A new motor from VW is a little less than replacing parts, but then charge to take out the old one then put in and hook up the new one.

We are looking at a 2007 GTI to get but I dont know. Im not a fan of a $380 car payment!

I think if this wouldnt have been a interference engine, I wouldnt have had as big of an issue since everything shut off as soon as it happened due to some of the sensors. Chains definitely do break, but usually not as common as belts, but they do stretch though!

I would take the shop to small claims court. Make sure you have a copy of all the records/ watch judge judy lol Report them to the BBB And phone VW international. I hate the cop out of wear an tear.
If they couldn't even set a timming belt right, you can't trust them with a Motor rebuild thats for sure!

I think the biggist thing they need to change in the auto industry. Is that there allowed to charge journeyman rates, when they have 20 apprentices and only one journeyman in the shop. it's disgusting
