Here in Philly the subcontractors are paid by the job, not the hour. So it's in their wallet's best interest to do as many jobs per day as possible, usually at the expense of the customer. I've gone into people's houses 2 days after they were installed to find the equip in the right places... but no wires. And the customer believing the subcontractor when they said "It'll turn on in 24 - 48 hrs".
Or the subcontractor that left a line running down the middle of the hall from the back bedroom to the front bedroom (trip hazard) in a house with preschoolers.
Or my absolute favorite:
Subcontractor told the customer her problem wasn't possible to fix. Since she lived so close to a hospital, the helicopters constantly flying in and out overhead would always cause interference with her cable

I think we are still the wild and woolly west.
I used to work customer service for a homebuilder and another guy in the same position use to tell people "it just can't be fixed" whenever he was stumped or it was going to be too much trouble. And people bought it. Jeez, we BUILT the house, what can't be fixed?

That's too true, piece work techs are crap. The almighty dollar has a way of ruining their work, even the good ones. Over here the techs are all hourly and get qa'd insanely, raises are based on good qa scores and lack of chargebacks, dos', and tc's. Needless to say their works quite a bit above the average piecemeal tech.
