Default How To Keep Your Bike From Being Stolen

Hey, since I am new to the whole motorcycle thing, how do you guys keep your bike from being stolen? Do you use a lock of some sort (besides locking the handlebars), alarm? Please be specific with your recommendations! Thanks

If someone wants your bike, they'll take it. I had mine chained and a disc lock, they cut the chain and took it anyways. Only advice I can give you is to keep it inside.

Yeah sorry to say if someone wants your bike, they'll get it no matter what you do. A couple of big guys and a van/truck and it's gone. Best advice is keep it in sight when at all possible like going to eat etc. Then keep it in a garage if you've got one.

There is nothing foolproof! I would keep it in a garage at night, if possible. First gear and locking the handlebars are mandatory everytime you park, but you already know that. Try not to put yourself in "at risk" situations, like having to leave it overnight somewhere because you had a few drinks for example. You could try a tracking device (lojack). Depends on your budget.

Don't ever assume its safe. Get comprehensive coverage through your insurance company if you're really worried about it. You won't mind as much knowing you can get it replaced. Most companies even cover modifications.

The best option is a garage. Bikes get swiped out in apartment parking lots like noone business.

Yes, insurance will save you restless nights of sleep worrying about your bike. Make sure you talk to the insurance people here on the forums that ride, ValleyCat for one could help you out with the details of what NEEDS to be covered and what is OPTIONAL. Usually the OPTIONAL stuff is what is going to cover vandalism, wether its from someone slashing your tires or a full out Grand Theft. Some policies cover enviornmental damage, for example if you live near the coast and there is a hurricane or tsunami and water gets in your intake and you crank it up and low and behold your engine is ruined. These types of OPTIONAL coverage might make your overall premium MUCH much higher, but if you are losing sleep at night, or are constantly worrysome then do what you have to do. Other than getting an awesome insurance plan you could take steps to secure it better. There are some chains and locks out there that are supposed to be 'theft proof' and will insure what you lock for up to a certain price (Like $5000). These locks are the ones that have hexagonal design in the chain to prevent tension breaks. Although if the chain is plasma torched or the lock is liquid iced then it's not covered. You know what? Just get a good insurance plan... lol

(Sincere Commercial Voice) For just a couple dollars a day, you can add comprehensive insurance onto your policy and rest assure that even though someone may take your bike, you don't have to lose what it's worth.
