RE: Engineering members...
depends on the stepper motor......100 bucks for a lil one....then you need the stepper drive which can start at 100 bucks.....and these are the bottom end...low power low torque units. start getting exotic and the cost ramps rather rapidly...the ball screws are where the money is...high precision ball screws can be in the thousands.....altho small ones aren't to bad ...the smallest I have encountered with an real decent precision is 1/4".....each ball nut runs 100-150 each.....3' length of screw is 75-125 bucks ...but these costs were what I remember when I was involved in designing and building a 12 axis machine....13 years ago

RE: Engineering members...
Thanks Pam
I was actually looking to make a motorized cabinet for my DVD collection. Basically a built in bookcase but with a cabinet at the bottom. The front piece would rise from the cabinet and the rear set of shelves would slide forward.
I was trying to figure out if I wanted to consider a stepper motor or just use cut off switches. I'm not an engineer so it will take some playing, but like 90% of my intended pet projects, it probably will never get past the few sketches I drew.
