I left southern California for Austin Texas. Kept the same 6 figure salary and live like a freakin king. In Newport Beach house were approaching $1,000.00 a square foot. Absolute nonsense.
I don't see deflation ever being a reality, just corrections of some things back to appropriate inflation levels.

there is a lot of truth to your statement, but you left out a very important part.. today's economy. Just take a walk around walmart, mcdonalds, or any big chain company. Before, you would see retired people and young college kids working for the summer, which is the way it should be.. Now, you see people in their late 20's early 30's even 40's working to make ends meet. When there arent any better jobs to be had, its hard to work to get there. Your seeing more and more people with bachelor degree's working for minumum wage because thats all thats out there. When you have 50k a year jobs leaving and being replaced with minumum wage jobs, theres not a lot of options.
Sometimes, the only option is to survive on minumum.
I wish they would start labeling minimum wage jobs as "starter jobs" which is what they are..... Too many people actually think they should be able to live on minimum wage. The truth is some employers need to pay less to even be in business and some people like kids or people in between real jobs can take less pay to get by for a short time. I hate it when people are silly enough to think that they should be paid great wages and benefits for working the typical min. wage job. In all reality, I don't think we even need a minimum...... If someone is willing to work for $4 an hour... let him, if not, he can find another job. Strive for something better people!!! Stop trying to survive on the minimum!!!!

outside the box! awesome statement man, although im one of the college kids.

RE: Deflation and increased minimum wage.
I think it is just a shallow attempt to appease the lowly masses..
As has been said , survival at the bottom of the heap can be near impossible...
The have's rule the world and the have not's just survive in it ... the gap between the 2 will continue to get bigger and bigger regardless!!...
No matter what bread crumbs the have's decide to throw at have not's to stop rebellion .. .... things will get progressively worse , even if they seem not to be ..

I live in Southern Oregon. While we seem to lead the country in minimum wage pay, we also have the highest teen pregnancy, highest unemployment rate, and pay way more than the national everage for fuel. I got gas the other day (it is illegal to pump your own gas in this state), and I was helped by a guy that used to be a customer of mine. He said pumping gas was the only job he could get, and there were so many people that had applied for the job. He felt lucky to get a job that paid minimum wage. Hopefully his significant other has a minimum wage job as wellso they can be lucky enough to live in a motel or a piece of crap apartment. Times are hard...it is a good time to be able to play the blues.

'Madame, there is no bread - the people grow hungry'...........
'Let them eat cake'...........(Marie Antoinette)
Hmmmmmmmmm...................
Minimum wage is what started the problem in the first place.
In the east, there is no minimum wage, which is why all your Nike, Power etc shoes are now made there, along with many other products. No-one could afford them if they were made in the West.....
The West is geared towards consumption, the East towards production, it's really that simple, and until we in the West learn to accept living standards which are but a shadow of what we enjoy today, we will continue to decline.
The entire textile industry in SA collapsed years ago when importers were able to bring in clothing, curtains, etc etc cheaper than the manufacturing costs here ! I was affected by that particular collapse, which lead to a partial career change........Toyota vehicles produced in SA are sold at a price 30% cheaper in Australia than we have to pay ! Doesn't make sense.
Protective tariffs to support local production will help to an extent, but not in the long term.
Increased productivity, retraining and streamlining of processes, and removing all the unneccessary ' dead wood' in Companies would be a start..........
