Default Checking stabilizer?

So i just got a pretty good deal on a scotts damper for $100 that some guy was selling off his katana. Its in pretty good condition besides some small knicks on the one side that looks like its maybe from a key or something hitting it while riding but ANYway...is there a way to check the actual working condition of the damper or is it even possible for them to break/go bad besides the oil inside them needing to be changed maybe? Is it worth sending into scotts to get serviced?
