I remember reading somewhere that it is important that you do not do things such as watch TV or eat in bed. Use bed for sleep, sex and maybe reading right before hand. You will find your body will become conditioned to sleeping in it only and will facilitate falling to sleep faster. This seems to hold up pretty true for me...or it's because I'm getting older.
There are other times, when I have a ton of crap going through my head. I then try to focus on one thing. Usually just a field of gray and try to block out other thoughts. Usually I fall asleep out of boredom at that point.
