Default Can someone explain electronic speedo sensors?

I am trying to figure out what needs to be done to get a cable driven speedo converted to an electronic signal. I have read I need a speedo sensor and that one off of a gsxr will work. What I want to know, is how do these sensors work? It looks like it goes on the front sprocket, but I need a little more elaboration than that, and that's about all I know.

Are you trying to convert that 87 hurricane to something more modern-ish? If you're really dead-set on doing it, I'd say just get a cheap F3 engine... has the electronic speedo thingy ontop of tranny.

Yessir. I am in the process of finishing off my RR conversion and trying to gather parts/intel on how to do an F4i gauge swap. I would go with 600rr gauges, but I have read the F4i gauge is easier. I would swap out the engine, but I already put another F1 engine in last year. I almost did use an F3 engine, but it didn't look like it would fit right.

Could you elaborate on the 'electronic speedo thingy on top of tranny'?

Not sure if its the same for bikes but my prelude was electronic and the year before were cable. On the tranny was a gear driven sensor for both kinds (cable and electronic) The electronic converted the speed of the gear inside to electronic pulses which in turn produced a mph reading. While on the other hand the mechanical one (cable) fed directly to the Speedometer gauge producing the speed you were at.

Hope this helps.

^ It does help that I've been told that and now I'm not just assuming. The main difference I am thinking on bikes is that the cable driven sensor is attached to the front wheel, whereas the electronic sensors go on the front sprocket some how.

Alrighty, hopefully pics work first time around..

First pic- location on engine.

Second pic- what plug looks like

Third pic- blurry, but you can see the little metal contact points in there kind-of-ish

Hrm...interesting. I was expecting it to be like, on the front sprocket, not into the casing. I wonder why the F3 guys that did this swapped to a gsxr sensor then?

Thx for the pics.

EDIT: I was just looking at a pic of the engine I put in my bike, oddly enough it has a spot for that sensor, just not there....like they planned on putting on there later but didn't include it until F3.

Actually, maybe not....it looks like that blank plate is on the f3 engine as well.

I imagine its the same concept for the car i stated above. The metal contacts inside are just for the sensor to send out its signal to wherever it goes. There must be a gear driven sensor inside.
