There is a possibility that I may move to NYC. If I ever happen to transfer to NY, I want to take my bike with me.

Now my question is: what are the "how-to's" maintaining a bike in a big city, parking, maintenance, costs etc.?

I was livin in a apart complex in DC. I did some puter work for someone in exchange for a card that worked the garage door. I would then park in the basement of the complex under an a ramp. I would also chain the bike up to a water main... all that to make sure that it wouldnt get towed or stolen. Now I have a my own private garage .

 

do you know how much private paid parking lots/spaces cost in the city?

Parking costwill dependon what neighborhood. Commercial garages in Manhattan will want at least $150/month, but people will rent you space in a private garage, or in a bike repair shop, etc. Go to the motorcycles section of craigslist for New York, and search for parking. Also look in the parking/storage section under 'housing.'
