You can download Microsoft ActiveSync. That is what it uses to connect to the computer. This will allow you to sync up to Outlook, but I don't think you need it to transfer music. I believe you can transfer music and other things, you can do using Windows Explorer. You should see a new item for "Mobile Device."
I order my Ringtones and programs from Handango. I believe the programs are usually downloaded to my computer and then I transfer onto the phone. When ordering ringtones, you are sent a text message with a link which which will download the ringtone from you.

ya i've had one for over a year now. when you plug the phone into your computer you will have a new device under my computer called "Mobile Device". Then you can browse the file system of your phone, just dump the music in a convienent folder, like the "my documents" folder on the phone. If you have a SD card then you need to browse to "Mobile Device" -> "My Windows Mobile Based Device" -> "Storage Card" and then drop you files on the storage card. Then on the phone you can use the program called "File Explorer" to brose to the storage card folder and select the songs you want to play or you can open the media player program first and select the songs from within that program.
As far as ringtones and stuff, just place the ringtone file on your phone somewhere convienent, I'm not positive on all the audio formats that are acceptable, I always just use .mp3. Then on the phone "tap & hold" the music file you want and select "set as ringtone".
You really have to approach these windows based phones with the same perspective as a computer and not a regular phone. The phone just has a file structure like a computer, once you get familar with it you will be golden. You can also add additional folders to suit your needs and keep your music and picture files organized. I hope that helps a little bit.
