Always Get A Second Opinion !! (UPDATED)
I have been slowly recovering from my accident last month where I broke my collar bone. Or so I thought. I went to see an orthopedic surgeon today to make sure me collar bone was healing properly after 5 weeks. When he saw my x-ray from the accident he said there was no way the break was going to heal on its own because there was too much distance between the pieces. He took another x-ray to be sure and the x-ray today was identical to the one from the day of the accident. Now I am scheduled for surgery to install a plate first thing Monday morning. The orthopedist told me that the surgery should have been done the same day of the accident and it would have been healed almost 100% by now. My wife and I specifically asked the doctor in the ER if he thought surgery was necessary he told us that it was only required when the bone breaks through the skin. At least he did recommend having it checked after 4 or 5 weeks. I guess this will teach me to always get a second opinion.

RE: Always Get A Second Opinion !!
I hurt my collar bone when I buried the nose of my snowboard and flipped up and impacted first onto my shoulder area. It hurt like a son of a bitch, and when I went to the doctor moths later (for something else...not VD), I asked her to check my bone. She said there was a problem, but that they normally don't do anything for a collar bone injury.

RE: Always Get A Second Opinion !!
My surgery to repair my right collar bone went very well. I have about 80% use of my right arm now and should be back to 100% by the end of the month. I was able to go for a quick ride around the block 5 days after the surgery and I rode to work after 8 days. My wife told the doctor what I did and he surprised me by saying that I should try to get back to normal activities as soon as possible. The doctor also assured me that the airport metal detectors will not pick up the titanium plate.

RE: Always Get A Second Opinion !!
The thing about ER doctors is they aren't specialists like an orthopedic doctor is. They know what they're doing, don't get me wrong, but they aren't specialized in a certain area.
I also wonder if they used a Black & Decker driver to put those screws in

RE: Always Get A Second Opinion !!
A few years ago my oldest son had a spill when we were on a family vacation skiing. The ski patrol took him down the mountain and checked him out and told us he had a seperated shoulder. My son was in a lot of pain (this was our last night there and we were leaving early the next morning). They asked him if he wanted them to pop it back in place. Fortunately, he said no. They assured him and us it was dislocated and he decided to wait until we got home to have someone look at it and we got him something for the pain for the ride back home.
When he went to the Dr, the x-rayed and found out he broke his collar bone. Can you imagine the pain my son would've been in had the tried to "pop it back into place"? ha ha ha!!! Always think about who is checking you out and if they are generally trained or specialized. My advice is to at least have someone specialized verify the first diagnosis.
Anyway, back to your situation... glad you finally got it taken care of properly and that everything is working out.
