Almost everyone here, myself included, strongly advise riders to take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Even if you've been riding for some time it will give you knowledge that can and will make you a better, safer rider. It may seem expensive but you'll get a break on your insurance and it could very well save your life, not to mention the cost of replacing parts if you happen to wreck your bike.
Another point to keep in mind is your confidence level. Successful completion of the BRC will make you more confident in your abilities to survive on the street, which, again, will make you a better rider.
If you can afford it now, do it now. If not, make a point of taking it as soon as you can.

there's nothing wrong with going ahead and taking the test -- if nothing else it'll teach you what to expect and what they really look for. but there is no substitute for the msf course; it's a load of fun to go through with other riders and very educational. better to learn the right way from pros than get your license and think you've got it made.
