Default sup homies....help with buying a CBR 600RR

hey all....am new to this forum and bikes....i have ridden bikes before but 180-225CC bikes.....certainly 600 cc is new to me....

am thinking of buying a 600RR from a colleague....its a 2003 with 8200 miles....he offered my for $5K but i just ....finally we agreed on $3.5K.....

now i dont know what maintenance has been done on the bike....but this is what i was thinking:

1>oil and filter change
2>spark plugs
3>air filter
4>coolant
5>tranny fluid
6>brake fluid

i also own a 2005 Acura TL and I do all the maintenance + mods on it myself.....I still havent done an extensive search on how to do's.....

if you could elaborate on each point....as in what oil and filter....i read articles and people do am oil change every 2K miles.....is that required ??? do i need to do a brake flush ?....what tranny fluid to go with ? how to go about changing it ?

am not going to track the bike....its basically for fun/weekend only.....

any help would be appreciated.....

see ya'll around....

Hey there and welcome!!

The 600RR is a fine bike and that is quite low miles for it's age so it should be in tip top condition,

your service list is about right and a good starting point ... the engine, clutch and gearbox share the same oil

I just recently did my brake fluid both front and rear so here is the write up for that
https://cbrforum.com/forum/cbr-600rr-12/brake-bleeding-fluid-change-600rr-models-110092/

Good luck with the bike, post up pics if you get a chance

Let us all know how you get on

Enjoy the forums

Thanks for the prompt response Jules....So when I do the oil change, I will be taking care of Engine+Tranny (Clutch included).....

so what kind of engine oil is used....10W-40 ? am in Kansas and it gets cold here in the winter and 100 in the summer.....so Mobil 1/ Rotella....what is preferred and how much (I dont wanna throw in 5 quarts as I do in my 3.2L car engine LOL)....

also about Seafoam....i seafoam my car....but does it apply here too ? Can you seafoam the bike ?

BTW thats a bad *** write up for the brake flush....props !!!

Hey welcome aboard. Juliet already pointed you to a great HowTo on the brakes. Let's see if I can add anything good

Oil and filter: This is gonna be everyone's personal choice. So long as its the right weight for your climate and you'll be ok. Also don't use any oils with detergents. That "cleaner engine" oil will have you buying a new clutch quick. In my 06 F4i, I use Rotella T6 5w-40 and a Purolator Pure filter. Some guys may hammer the crap outta their bikes to need an oil change every 2k. My bike is on a 4k / riding season schedule tho.

Brake flush: Quick answer (since you work on cars)

That's from my 06 F4i at 2.6k miles. Color of horse **** and the consistency of snot. We're on our brakes more and harder than a car. Really should be flushed every couple years as routine maintenance.

Something you didn't mention was chain maintenance. I highly recommend you inspect the chain and sprockets for wear, adjust the chain slack if necessary and clean / lube the chain. You should do this about every 300 miles or so, so its best to get the routine started now.

thanks kuroshio.....i think 5W-40 sounds good to me....am pretty positive and not going to put even 1mile on my (future) bike in the winter coz of icy conditions in Kansas.....

so well here is the sum up:

Oil/Tranny/Clutch: Rotella T6 5w-40 and a Purolator Pure filter(i like mobil1 as well)...every 4-5K/6 months....3 quarts ?
Brakes: Any DOT4
Coolant: (any particular one here) ?
Spark Plugs: NGK FTW....(i use NGK in my car as well )
Chain and Sprocket inspection and lube: Again any particular lube ?
Air filter: i dont wanna go with Fram....KNN ?
