Potential 04 CBR600 F4i
 

Hello all,
I'm very, very new to the bike scene. I drive an 08 Acura TL Type-S daily, and the car before that was a 93 Ford Probe GT (yeah yeah the name is lame I know lol). I am very mechanically inclined with autos so light modding shouldn't be an issue at all.

My buddy has an 04 CBR600 F4i that he dumped once (but rode again after) that he said he would sell to me for cheap. It has frame sliders that seemed to take most of the trauma that I would want to replace for aesthetics at least. In addition it will need mirrors and a new windshield.

He lost his key during his move (ex-Navy) so I have read that I will need to take off the ignition switch and bring it to Honda to have a new key ordered. Is that correct?

After he gets a new key and a new battery, he plans to bring it to a motorcycle shop to have the frame/forks/etc. checked for straightness and weld cracks.

I have been reading/watching videos on what to look for regarding what kind of shape a bike is in. It has been sitting for a while so I'm anxious to see the inside of the gas tank. If the walls have corroded and contaminated the gasoline, what will need to be done besides draining the fuel? Are the tanks anti-corrosive?

Welcome to the forum, and potentially 2 wheels. A couple things.

It concerns me a bit that the sliders took a hard hit. They really cant take THAT hard of a hit without it doing damage to the head. When you are in front of it get a flashlight and observe where the sliders bolt into. Check for hairline (or worse) cracks around the bolts. Sliders are a double edge sword for sure. Work great, to a point. Not exact on the key thing, but you should be able to get a locksmith to get you one. You may need title, or bill of sale and etc. to get it but thats not a huge deal.

If you can get him to foot the bill on some of those items then good, but would be great to talk him down and do that little stuff yourself, always a good negotiating point. Depending on how long it sat it may need a new tank. Minor surface rust/corrosion is manageable. If it has deep rust then a new tank is in order more than likely. That is a 5 or 6 hundred dollar part new. Less for used (some good used tanks usually pop up on ebay for half or less). Depending on how bad the gas is and how rusty the inside of the tank was, the pump and filter may need changed, filter at least should be. Also, the fuel pressure regulator is a part that would need checked out. Aside from that, you will need to run cleaner through the system to make sure it all checks out, you may get lucky there.

All in all, you have some negotiating points and hopefully you can get him down. Just be very sure to check for any damage around the block because that is just a real bad day if the aluminum split. Good luck.

So, I called the Honda Motorcycle dealer around here and they said I need the ignition switch and the title for the bike. I did a little research and it appears it's only 2 Size 40 Torx screws holding it on. I will be checking it out this weekend and hopefully getting a key ordered.

Regarding the frame slider, it doesn't look like it hit hard on it per se, more that it slid on it. I will be sure to check what you mentioned to look for.

He said he would sell it to me for $1000 after he fixed it up and checked it's structural integrity. I told him I'd rather repair the little stuff myself so he may even give it to me for cheaper. The bike has been sitting for a little over a year I believe, so fingers are crossed that the tank isn't too bad.

BTW he said it has around 9k miles on it.

As far as the bike - just make sure the frame/forks/etc are straight. If there's not a lot of other things trashed on the bike besides the frame sliders, it couldn't have been that hard of a fall - and the rest is probably okay.

Check the inside of the gas tank. If its rusted, you'll need a lining kit from northern auto parts. They sell a kit that coats the inside of the tank. It's only $30 or so - not that bad of a deal at all.

He fell/slid in the grass only (I think it was a median) doing 50mph or so. So I think the grass/ground probably gave a decent amount and I'm hoping that saved it from taking major damage. The fairings are slightly scuffed and only down to the plastic color in a few spots. I felt the clutch and it didn't seem sloppy at all so I don't think it was damaged much, if at all.

We tried taking the ignition switch off and we would have had it if he didn't have the steering lock engaged. That really put a halt on things. He's going to trailer it to our local Honda motorsports dealership to see about getting a new key and also to have them check the bike over for damaged goods. I hope the gas tank isn't a mess...time will tell.
