I can't encourag you enough to take the Basic Rider Course offered through the MSF (Motorcycle Saftey Foundation). http://www.msf-usa.org/index_new.cfm...%20RiderCourse. They'll teach you everything you need to know to start riding and riding safely.

There are also a number of books, like _Proficient_Motorcycling_, _A_Twist_Of_The_Wrist_, etc that are great sources of information. You might also want to get something with a bit less horsepower if this is your first bike, but that's just my $.02.

Good luck!

Definitly take the MSF Basic Course if you wanna start riding, they really teach you sooo much useful information and once you pass the course you dont have to take the road test for the motorcycle license. Unless you have a very close friend that trusts you very much and has a sportbike, I do not think anyone else would even let you sit on one. So I think that your best bet is to take the course, and regarding what kind of bike you get, it really depends on you. If you wanna get a 600RR its fine just dont get anything bigger. My first bike is a 600 F4i and I have had no trouble with it in terms of it being too much bike. You know yourself and as long as you do not push yourself beyond your skill level, you will be fine.
