As far as the mods, what you do for cosmetics is up to you - it's strictly personal, so go with what fits your style.
For performance mods, #1 is to get the suspension properly set up for your weight. It will make a huge difference. Many people rave about Washington Cycles, which is in Washington, way out route 78. I can't recommend them personally, but they have great word of mouth. #2 for performance is 'mod the rider, not the bike." You're already off to a good start taking the MSF class. Once you've done that you will know some good low-speed drills you can continue to work on. Then maybe next season, take the MSF experienced rider course, and from there you can go on to track days or the Lee Parks class. The more you learn, the better and safer rider you will be. These are amazing machines, and it's a challenge for all of us to raise our game enough to do them justice.
Enjoy, and ride safe!
