re: your CA to IL quandary i think it'd be cheaper if you shop around for a low-cost shipping co ... i've heard of some transporters doing coast-to-coast for as little as $300 - which may seem more than the $62/day U-Haul but if you factor in cost of gas and time spent away from work it might not be such a bad option
there's motorbike superstores all over LA ... Bert's in Inland Empire, DelAmo in Inglewood, LongBeach in ... well LongBeach , PacificCoast in Oxnard are some of the names that come to mind ... google them, call and ask whom they use to ship vehicles and take it from there
