New here...hoping to get a bike!

Hey guys!

My name is Bruce, Im 17 and will be turning 18 in july. I go to highschool for auto collision repair. Thought i'd jointhe forum because im trying to encourage my mother to allow me to buy a CBR. Im really looking for a 600rr or 954. I have a 2004 Ski-Doo MXZX 440 race sled i rip around on, and have converted from race fuel to pump gas over the summer. I also have a '96 Ford Probe GT with a ton of parts and custom paint.I was thinking about trading that for a bike. Not sure yet. Do you think i could get an even trade for my sled? i paid $4000 for it. Im excited to get into the forum and meet some of you.

Thanks,
Bruce

Welcome. I would definitely suggest staying away from a 954 as your first street bike, most members here will suggest against a 600rr as your first street bike as well. Whatever you decide to do make sure you gear up for every ride and be safe!

$4000 should be able to get you an 03-04 600rr in fairly good shape if you shop around a bit, keep in mind an 18 year old with a 600rr will be looking at spending probably close $2000 a year on full coverage insurance with a decent driving record. More for the 954. Theres nothing wrong with picking up something a little older for your first bike, its a whole different ball game than being on a dirt bike, and you wouldn't want to drop a nice shiny 600rr.

An sv650 or a gs500 would be great choices for a first bike, with less plastic to potentially destroy as you're learning. A honda hornet would also be great, they have the 599cc motors like the 600rr's do, but they are a little harder to find at least in my area.

thanks for the tips jutsin. my dad has owned bikes for about 30 years. his last bike was a harley FXRT...MINT..but it was in our garage which burnt down a few years ago. so if he gets into riding again, especially if i do we will probobaly work something out with insurance

A 954 is a very bad idea to get as your first real bike. I've had mine for quite awhile now and I'm still learning things about it. A 600 is also quite a handful, but if you aren't an idiot (no offense, but you know exactly what I mean) it's manageable.

Regardless of what you decide, best of luck and let us know how things are going.

or even if you start on something a bit older lie a 600 hurricane you will still have the sporty look, pay alot less for insurance and a ceaper bike if you would happen to lay it over
