Default new to forum looking for first bike

hey, im new to the form and need your wisdom in buying my first bike. Im 19 years old, 6'1' 180lbs. Ideally, im looking into either a cbr 600RR or an r6. i have a friend that has an r6 that loves it but everyone keeps saying that honda is the only way to go so i dunno. i am very aware of my limits and im more than willing to take my time learning to ride the bike and am going to take an msf corse before i even buy the bike. Id really like to just buy the bike and learn on it slowly. i really dont wanna mess with learning on a slower bike and having to sell it to get a new one but if you guys feel its absolutly necessary then id like your suggestions on that too... i wouldnt want to spend any more than $2500 on a starter if i have to.

well anyway, id really like your suggestions on this, ive done a lot of research but still am not completely sure which way to go.

If you're talking brand new RR or R6 for a first bike I'd have to recommend against it. I see these threads on various boards a lot and it always draws out the idiots who claim they started out on a turbo-nos-zx12 and they did fine bla bla bla. I've never met anyone personally that has never dropped a bike -- new plastics are very expensive. So for that reason alone I'd say learn on a beater bike. A good used F2 or F3 can be had for $2500 or so. They're plenty fast, light and handle well. And if ya do drop it or lay it down in a corner it's no big deal. And I speak from experience -- my first bike was a 1981 CX500Custom for $500. I rode the wheels off that bad boy and sold it 4 yrs later for $450. Oh yeah, I dropped it like 3 times

Good luck in your search and have fun at the MSF class.

Hi and welcome to the CBR forums. I'm with chain. I would reccomend an older cbr600 to start out with. A F2 or F3 will be perfect for a beginner. They are very forgiving bikes and have plenty of power. The bike will grow with you. The better you learn to ride, the better the bike will perform. The great thing about bikes is they hold their resale value. If you pick up a used CBR600f2 or f3 for $2500, you can keep it and learn on it for a year. Then when you are ready to upgrade you can sell it for just about what you paid for it. Make sure you set aside money for gear as well. Thats the most important purchase. You will have a blast at your msf course. I would highly reccomend doing that before you purchase a bike. Good luck with everything.
