Default Just bought my first CBR

Good evening..just picked up a 1990 CBR 1000F on craigslist for $1800. Bike has 30k on it, new tires, and looks great..100% original with the exception of Givi hard bags (which are going on craigslist as soon as I remove the mounting brackets from the bike). I do hear the rattling noise I've seen referenced here when I first start it but once it warms up it sounds great. Should I replace the cam chain tensioner before I register and hit the road or am I ok to ride for now? Thanks...

Hey there hockey04, congrats on your new bike, and that's a hell of a deal too! Someone will be along soon who knows about the 1000F, lol.

Thanks for the welcome Incognito. Can't wait to get this thing registered and out on the road. Just want to do it right and not jeopardize the condition of this bike by being impatient and riding it without fixing the tensioner...if there's any chance I could cause damage.

Well, the CCTL (cam chain tensioner lifter) is apparently a pretty common issue among motorcycles. As a matter of fact, I just replaced mine yesterday (coincidentally). Whether damage can occur if you run it like that, I don't think so, unless it's very severe noise/vibration. But risking your engine for a $60 part, it's not worth finding out. I think you'll be OK riding your bike, just don't go crazy with the power until you get it fixed, you know?

I replaced the stock OEM part with this little guy; manual CCTL.

Default Thanks..great forum

Thanks, and thanks to Incognito for the advice too. Started the bike this afternoon and the rattling starts right after start up but completely disappears once it's warmed up. Picked up some Honda oil and a filter today, ordered some fasteners to replace a few that were missing on the fairing and ordered a front brake lever to replace the one that appears to have been tweaked in a low speed/garage tip over. Took a quick, unregistered blast around the neighborhood today. Runs and shifts great but seems like it may need front brake pads too, no big deal. Can't wait to get this thing registered and on the road. Still blown away by how well this 19 year old bike runs and looks. Can't beat Honda engineering. I'll post some pics soon...and the cam chain and tensioner will be addressed shortly. Thanks again. Great forum.
