Default CBR owner to be outta South Jersey

Hi all. First off, I am not currently an owner. I have long only plaid with the idea of even getting a bike, let alone being given one. Long story short, a close friend of mine has a Cbr600F4i (around 2004)that has some issues. Given the circumstances he is giving it to me to fix and have.

Diagnosis (probably misdiagnosed)
-Cracked crankshaft; bike is losing oil.

I am decently mechanically inclined, but mainly with cars. After reading around I found that regardless of how severe the problem I have two options
-Rebuild the motor (rings, bearings, crankcase, and crankshaft)
-Buy another motor to swap in

Chances are I will be doing the work out of my garage with no more than one pair of hands to assist. I'm just as anxious to wrench as I am to ride. Although I still need to get around to getting my permit, and getting gear. I will continue to read around to not flood forums with beatn to death threads but please chime in suggestions ect.

Hi & welcome to CBRF!
Option #2 is really the best choice.
Plenty of F4i motors on EBay to pick from...most under $800. I wouldnt bother spending the $ and time to rebuild the current motor.
Good luck and check us out in the F4i forum if you have any further questions
