Tyre dimensions sc24
Hello experts,
I am about to order new tyres to my CBR 1000FL 1990 SC24, but I have no idea what I should get. These are the facts: - security is the most important factor - cost is also important (not too expensive) - I am short so if possible a tyre that does not add too much height. - my weight is 90 kg. - I will drive mainly on good roads on asphalt - I think I will drive at not very high speeds most of the time. Question to experts who know more than me: Can anyone suggest or link a good set of tyres (front and back)? Which brand is good and what dimensions do you suggest? I have not driven my bikes yet so I don’t know how they feel. I checked on the back wheel and now it is 170/60 zr17m/c 72w bridgestone on. The front has same brand but 120/70 zr17m/c 58w. interestingly, I have another bike - same model and year and that has got 180/55 z r 17 m/c 73w on the back and 120/17 on the front. I have not driven that either, so I don’t know. But those tyres are good. Any suggestions welcome. I live in Sweden. /Fredrik |
Hello Fredrik,
The tire sizes (170/60-17 and 120/70-17) you mentioned above are the stock tire sizes and personally, I wouldn't deviate from that. The Z rating denotes a tire rated to 149 mph/240 Km/h I live in a fairly wet climate and traditionally use Michelin Pilot Power 2CT tires on my bikes. They are very good performance tires that provide good grip and excellent wet weather performance. I feel very confident using those tires. My recently purchased 1990 model is shod with Dunlop Sportmax tires which I am finding out are also an excellent tire. I have not ridden them enough in wet weather to give you an accurate assessment of their performance in those conditions but so far they haven't scared me on wet pavement. For new tires, i would recommend the Michelin |
Perfect, thank you wooferdog. This helped me, I will look for Michelin’s in those dimensions.

Like Woof says, the 120/70-17 * 170/60-17 are the factory sizes. I switched my rear to the 180/55 for price. There are many manufactures with different model bikes with 120/70-17 *180/55-17 tire configuration out there. The are easier to find than 170's at times and better prices at times too. There is very little difference in tire diameter going from the 170/60 to 180/55. The tire width is 10mm wider on the 180. That's 5mm per side. Unless your a full blown racer I doubt you'll know the difference.
I recently mounted Dunlop RoadSmart 3 tires on my '94. I fell in love with them as soon as I pulled away from the shop that mounted them. I actually put 350 miles on them before heading home. Here's a LINK to a write up on them. I have found that most cheaper (price) tires are harder rubber and don't work well on wet roads. Sport tires need to get hot before they work well so they slip in wet conditions when roads are cooler. |
