All of the above is correct but I thought I should add one thing. The owners of the storage units cannot legally confiscate the contents of the units. They must be auctioned off or destroyed (in the bin). This was set up so unscrupulous owners could not just “lose” your payment and then take your unit if they saw something they liked.
I was a landlord at an apartment complex and had to go through a few of these situations.
