Default CBR1000f-j Gen 1 Mirror Extension

Hi folks

Don't know about you but the mirrors on my f-j are about as much use as **** on a bull. Unfortunately I have been unable to find mirror spacers such as those available for later CBRs nor can I afford universal extendable mirrors that are available on ebay either.

In the end I came up with this, it sounds a bit 'Heath Robinson' but it has worked. I did think about having some spacer blocks made up at a little engineering firm I know, but I think the labour (time) costs involved may have been a bit prohibitive.

In the end I bought 8 x white rubber doorstops from B&Q, some white insulating tape and a pack of longer M6 bolts, total cost £20.

I removed the mirrors, using 4 of the stops on each side as spacers, I tightened them down so as all 4 spacers on each mirror were pinched firmly between the mirrors and fairing, then wrapped the insulating tape round each set of stops so that they looked like a solid block. Both mirrors feel as securely fixed as before and each side has been extended by one inch.

I've not managed to road test it yet, (because as usual it's pissing down), but I have sat on the bike and the coverage in the mirrors is 100% better, I can actually see what is behind me.

I've attached a few photos including the type of doorstop, a before and after and a few others.

Cheers, Steve

This is the type of ingenuity I like to see!

Great to see a man using his brains Steve rather than just thowing money at a problem.

Thanks for the comments guys, I have thought about buying a bench or dapping mat off ebay. You can get one at the moment 6"x4"x1" for £10 including P&P, which would be big enough to make two spacers, but I don't have a bandsaw which I think would be the easiest way to cut it to shape.

My door stops will do for now

Cheers, Steve
