HOWTO - 07-09 CBR600RR: Make your own * LEGAL* fender eliminator for under $5

So we 07+ CBR600RR owners all know the problem: We've got this massive chunk of plastic bolted to the back of our bikes that we pretty much have to leave in places to be street legal. If you're like me, you come from an area where the cops will regularly pull you over because "that tire tread looks low" or "it's Tuesday," so even using a fender eliminator that stows your tag under the battery is totally out of the question. Our only real, full-featured solution? This guy:

Rumble Concept's Armor-series fender eliminator, with brake and turn signal LEDs integrated. The cost? TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS. $200 for $8 worth of aluminum and a handful of 5-cent LEDs. I have may have bought some dumb crap in my life, but even I can't convince myself that this is in any way a worthwhile investment.

So what are we to do? Go to Home Depot, that's what. Head to the plumbing section, and get yourself one of these:

It's a pipe hanger. You actually want the one with regular holes instead of the keyhole slots, but I couldn't find it on their website. DO NOT grab the strapping strips that come wrapped in coils; its too flimsy and will cause your plate to flop around like a fish. Also grab a pair of 7mm nuts and bolts.

Get your hanger home, and cut a pair of 3-hole sections off of it, and put them aside. Next, remove the license plate bracket from the fender, and using the nuts and bolts you bought, attach one end of each of the pipe hanger sections to it (don't worry, pictures to follow).

After that, using a dremel or hacksaw (I actually had the best luck with the hacksaw) cut the mudflap off just below the turn signals and brake light. You can do this without removing anything from the bike, so it's a quick job. Take the mudflap and throw its ugly ass in the fire.

Finally, remove the nuts that hold the brake light in place, attach the other end of the pipe hangers to the brake light's bolts, and put the nuts back on. You should be left with this:

You can then go one step further if you want, and add the MUCH CHEAPER integrated tail lights that just replace the stock brake light, and get rid of your signals for a nice flush look:

Sorry there aren't step-by-step pictures, but I was pretty sure this was going to end in embarrassment, so I didn't take any until the shock of it actually working wore off. You can get the entire gist of it form the pics.

If you have any questions, POST THEM IN THIS THREAD. ***DO NOT PM ME*** PMing questions doesn't help anybody but you, because you're the only one who gets the answer. Post in-thread to make sure EVERYONE knows it.

Special thanks to Tacoma25 and this thread for pointing out that you don't have to be rich to look good.

This is rad! I think I'll do this to mine. The only gripe I have is the turn signals. I don't like the stock turn signals but I don't know if the integrated tail light is visible enough for me.

Johnnyx - it says the turn signals are amber in that tail light, do you happen to have a video of it?

That's dim as hell.

Here's mine. Its a Clear Alternatives, and it's super bright. THis was filed in a brightly-lit garage. The brake light is that bright, too, when activated, but I didn't film it:
