How to: Make your own, very cheap, GPS motorcycle mount

I did this modification on my 99 CBR600F4
and a Navigon 2100

You will need:
-3/8" pipe preferably plastic
-Something for added grip, i used duct tape
-A drill and drill bit to make a hole big enough for a screw to fit in
-A GPS and GPS mount

Step 1) I started by taking my stock gps mount and unscrewing the actual holder from the base.

Step 2) I found a plastic pipe that was about 3/8in in diameter and used that as my attachment rod. If you arent as lucky and dont have a pipe laying around im sure your local hardware store will have one. just make sure you figure out the size before you make any purchases. youll want the pipe just a little bit smaller than the whole, the grip tape will make it a snug fit.

Step 3) I took the plastic cover from the center of my handlebars, (its the hollow place where a steering stabilizer would go) and measured how far i wanted it to go before it stuck out the bottom opening. 6 inches worked pretty well on my bike.

Step 4) Place the GPS holder in the opening of the end of the pipe and use that as a guide for where to drill.

Step 5) Drill a hole big enough for the screw that came with the mount to fit in.

Step 6) Assemble the holder with the pipe and screw.

Step 7) Take something sticky and grippy, i used duct tape,(now if your pipe is already snug and your mount doesnt move a lot then you can skip this step) take the tape and wrap it around the end of the pipe that is closest to the mount, wrap it just a few times and test it out, if it moves a lot and is still loose then add more tape. if it doesnt fit then take off all the tape and start again using new tape.

Step 8) Ride somewhere really far and get lost.:icon_bike: use your GPS to get home! lol have fun be safe and this cost me nothing since i already had the stuff laying around, if you need a pipe then you could use really anything cylindrical and that fits if you have it, if not then $5 max for that and then if you dont have a roll of duct tape tehn however much that costs. either way its way cheaper than those $80 mounts you buy online

Note) If you have extra money you could also just buy a extra holder for about $10 off of ebay and then use a dremel and cut off the end of the handle so you could use epoxy and glue it to the pipe for a more permanant solution. I am broke so i need to be able to take the handle off the pipe and reattach it to the stock mount in my car :icon_hyper:

P.S. ...Working on the electrical and attaching a cigarette lighter to my bike so i can just plug the charger in there ill post an update when im done with that, unless the project goes south and i cant do it of course hah

Really? was it easy to set up? about how long did it take you and how do you like it?

Took about an hour to do. The directions are easy to follow. I hook my gps up to it cause I use it all the time on my 'Cane. Also helps charge my cell phone too.

K i finished the wiring for the USB and it worked but i decided i wanted something more permanent and efficient so i decided to cut the usb and connect the wires directly to the bike. so instead of having to carry a USB charger with me and my bike all the time, now the charger is part of the bike. I will post pics soon
