HOW TO: GPS/Cell/iPod Pedestal Mount
 

So, if you want to pay $70 for a piece of plastic, you can purchase something like this:to mount your device on your ride.



but with $3 and a short trip to home depot, you can make something just as good:

a 12" piece of 1/2" pvc extension with threaded ends, a female adapter, and a pipe nut.
the 1/2" pvc fits nicely in the 1000rr neck, which is 24mm. cut about 1" off one end of the pipe and cement the adapter on that end. this makes the "top" end of the piece, while the bottom threaded end gets tightened down with the nut. (make sure you cut the right length so the threads land where you need them.)

i cut apart a regular windshield mount for my cell phone and fastened it to a male pvc adapter which can now screw into the top. (i cemented the ball joint from the mount to the adapter, so i still have full adjustability!) here's a shot of the whole assembly:

and.. painted the ugly stuff black so i look legit.
btw: hardly visible in the pic, but i also added a rubber O-ring butted up next the adapter top and bottom to help keep things tight and prevent scratches.

the whole upper assembly could have been done a tiny bit sleeker, but it looks fine as is, and i like the fact that it's modular -- i can make whatever new mount i want and just screw it into the adapter now.

i'll also point out that if you use a head lift type front stand this will obviously interfere, but since install/removal is so darn easy it's almost a non-issue.

I like the DIY route, but it does seem a bit tall. Very good for a first try though!

I have a very simple and sleek iPhone mount. I'll take a picture today to show. It was only 25 bucks or so (in dollars that is. I paid more due to Euro's :)). It's mounted to the windshield (removable) and the phone will stay dry due to it's location. I also have a charger installed that turns on via a small switch.

I said that it was removable before but but that I meant you don't have to drill your windscreen. The mount itself can be switched to a different though (if you upgrade from an iPhone 3GS to a 4. Or you bought a motorcycle navigation with a RAM mount).

It might not be super sexy when it's empty but I have my phone in it anyway. It also isn't visible from the front (with a tinted window).

One thing to note though, I'm quite tall so the way I have it mounted it partially blocks the view on my tach and neutral light. I hardly ever look at my tach and can see it when I'm hauling ass and laying down (if I wanted to). I also rarely look at the neutral light when stopping at a light because I just feel it go in.

If the mount is empty then I can see the neutral light no problem. Shorter people will probably see a bit more of the tach. I also recommend to do it on a bubble screen because the hump gives you a bit more room to play with. I don't have a double bubble (just a slight hump on mine) and it's perfect for me.

If you are wondering about vibrations.. Well the mount and windshield do a good job in absorbing those.
If you wonder about high speeds, well I use it daily on the highway and have done 140+ mph runs with it (sstt don't tell anyone!) and it's really sturdy. It also stays dry in the rain.

I'm also not too worried about someone taking it off because I put a couple drops of instant glue on the bolts and I have an alarm on the bike.

The brand is RAM Mount and the parts that I used were:

• RAP-SB-180U (The 'arm' with sticky mount)
• RAM-HOL-AP6U (The 3G/3GS cradle)
