How-to: Convert F4i wheels to 600RR axle size
#11
- With a 25mm (600RR size) axle, it is indeed entirely bolt on.
- With the 20mm (F4i size) axle, it takes a simple straight bushing to make the bracket fit the smaller axle (it seems most people make these out of hardware store pipe).
Regardless of the axle size, a washer is needed between the caliper bracket and the swing arm to center the caliper/pads on the rotor. Without this washer, two issues arise:
1 - the caliper sits too far "out" and the inside pad drags on the inside of the rotor
2 - the caliper bracket doesn't snug up between the wheel and the swing arm
I still need to take pictures of the front wheel setup. I'm still finalizing the spacing of the front rotors, however I have got the wheel on the GSXR (600RR size) axle and everything is mounted on the triple/frame.

Hey great tech in your thread!!
I'm doing a similar project on my 2001 f4i, i'm waiting on a Carrozzeria aluminum rear wheel from an 600rr to go on my f4i swingarm. I'm figureing if i use the 600rr axle n caliper/bracket i would just need to make custom axle adjusters for the larger axle size wouldnt I? Or is the slot in the f4i swing arm too small for this? 600rr adjusters work?
Was highly thinking about just putting a 600rr swing arm on but have heard bad things about the handleing change.

The F4i swing arm will not accept the 600RR axle, adjusters, or caliper bracket. You will have to run the F4i axle, which will mean either sleeving the wheel down or converting the wheel to take F4i bearings and seals (both of these options are not worth it/bad ideas in my opinion). The 600RR adjusters are friction only vs the F4i bolt on. The 02-06 600RR caliper is the same as the F4i caliper, but the swing arms require different caliper brackets that are not interchangeable.
Some people "say" the 600RR swing arm makes the bike fractionally slower to turn in on tight turns, but then others say it doesn't. The difference in wheelbase between F4i and 600RR swing arm is 1"-2" at most (don't have actually measurements in front of me).
Get the 600RR swing arm, save yourself a S**T load of work, and have a nicer looking bike.... that's my $0.02.

I found this out the hard way:
I got an 08 swing arm w/shock ($50 off ebay) and an 06 caliper and bracket ($25 off ebay). Went to mount up the caliper and it was all wrong. I then was told about the redesign in 07 so I bought an 07 caliper bracket ($5 off ebay) thinking I would reuse the 06 caliper. Nope, calipers are different. Had to go back and buy an 08 caliper ($15) to fit the 07 caliper bracket.
So, if you get an 02-06 swing arm, please PM me and I'll sell you my 06 caliper and bracket for a good price.
The 600RR shock will "fit" if you turn it around, however it just barely clears the subframe. My swing arm came with the 600RR shock and I could have run it, however I decided to switch to the 1000RR shock (was able to do an even swap).
I can't comment on the GSXR forks since the bike is not complete yet (still probably 6months to a year of work left....I hope that's all), however the ducati guys seem to love them. In addition to the radial calipers, the inverted forks provide increase rigidity in the tubes/frontend. I'm also using Honda 929 330mm rotors up front as well, so stopping should be an issue.
