96 900RR front brake change
 

Just looking for a little friendly advice. I am getting ready to do the front brakes on my 96 900RR, and just wondering what I need to do? Is it just as simple as pulling the calipers and swapping the pads? If so, is there anything else I need to be aware of when I do it?

Had the bike for 2, almost 3 years now, and this is the first time I am touching the front brakes. I know, I probably should have changed them a while ago. But anyway, just want some info before I get underway.

When you put the new pads in, you'll have to push the caliper's pistons back in to
make room for the new, thicker pads. When you do that, the fluid is going to back up
into the master cylinder. You'll need something to draw off the excess, as the pistons
are pushed in, to prevent it over-flowing. I've used a 50cc syringe, purchased at a
veterinary supply.

That said...I would actually drain and replace the brake-fluid, given the time interval.
Yeah, it's a bit of a chore, but you'll get a superior product.

Also, check the hanger-pin boots (those rubber accordians on the calipers) and
re-pack those with hi-temp brake grease. As well, assure that the calipers are free
and floating properly, on the hanger-pins. Those are the smooth bolts with threads
just next to the head, that attach the calipers to the brackets.

If you don't have SS-braided lines, this would be a good time to upgrade to them.
If you can afford to do so right now, this is a good "bang-for-the-buck" upgrade.
