I have this awesome speedometer that likes to work when it wants to. Typically it will just display 0mph but once the bike is warmed up it will work sporatically. Can someone please enlighten me how to fix this!

 

What kind of bike and what year?

 

The CBR needles have a tendancy to actually loosen up within the gauge, so it will occasionally catch from the friction of the spindle, but not work most of the time. Other than that, we'd need to know what bike you have for specifics. Overall, all the service manuals have a decent Speedometer Troubleshooting section.

Yeah, see above. Follow pages 19-11 through 19-13 in the service manual.

 

The speed sensor isn't making connection. It's a three wire plug near the rear of the transmission.

 

Thanks for the replies. After reading those 2 pages in the manual I am pretty sure it is the speed sensor, because the temp gauge works fine. I am not sure exactly where those connections are as the pictures are a bit grainy, but I'm going to figure it out tonight.

 

I wouldn't put any money on it being the sensor itself, connectivity problem. Poor groundage perhaps.

 

+1. Poor grounding could also have fried the sensor, though.

 

Take your battery cables off your battery and clean both lead ends to start with before digging too deep into it.
